These terms are sometimes used interchangeably. They refer to native plants that occur in a particular natural habitat and have reproduced there over a long period of time.
Many animal species have adapted to specific plants over the course of evolution. Wild species are generally better adapted to their respective habitats and the conditions there (e.g. the influence of soil, rainfall and climatic conditions). Wild plant mixtures ensure a supply of flowering plants throughout the growing season.

Gebietseigenes Saatgut – Chance oder Risiko für den Biodiversitätsschutz? (Jedicke et al. 2022)
Production is a very labour-intensive process. The base seed is collected by hand in the respective regions or production areas. Due to the high level of manual labour involved in production and the fact that harvesting the seed can sometimes be difficult, production costs are higher than for conventional seed.

- Seed mixture
- Has a mixture suitable for the site been selected?
Are there any cultivated varieties (e.g. of grasses or legumes) in the mixture? - Were certified regional seeds used?
- Has a mixture suitable for the site been selected?
- Implementation
- Was it sown in good time (March/April or August/September)?
Was the soil preparation sufficient to permanently disrupt the existing vegetation and suppress unwanted species? - Were the seeds deposited on the surface?
Was the area rolled after sowing?
- Was it sown in good time (March/April or August/September)?
- Development
- Was there enough rain after sowing? If not: be patient! Germination will be delayed.
- Have sufficient maintenance cuts been carried out, in line with the level of weed pressure, at a cutting height of approximately 10–15 cm?
- Were the maintenance cuts carried out before the weeds had gone to seed?
- Were problematic species tackled in good time?
- Management
- Were the more nutrient-rich areas mown in two halves, alternating between mid-May and mid-June and between late July and mid-August, and was the biomass removed?
- Was an additional mulching cut carried out by the end of March on very nutrient-rich areas with high biomass growth?
It is highly advisable to mix the seed with a filler, as this makes it easier to sow and ensures an even distribution of the seeds.
